Hi, I’m Ben
I’ve spent the best part of my life living in and around the city of York. From the age of 8, I’ve been lucky enough to explore all the country estates, attend rural shows and meet amazing people. In the colder months I’ve taken part in pheasant shoots and in the summer, explored the golf courses, forests and beaches around my home. I’ve loved it here so much that I spent my studies at University in York.
Calling York home was very important to me, not only because it taught me that pot noodles are not a sustainable diet plan. But it is where I discovered that I had a talent for marketing and branding. From running social media accounts to my internship at the University itself, I experimented with all sorts of mediums to direct my talents. I’d sit in my accommodation surrounded by all my books educating myself on how marketers and branding teams get their ideas.
It was only when I stood back that I realised my laptop was on top of a pile of books, my tea was using an Austen novel to rest on, as well as any available wall space had some form of literature on it. Maybe, just maybe, I had a somewhat mild love for the written word. Since that day, I’ve been a copywriter.
“Your degree isn’t even in marketing” - So why marketing at all?
My degree is actually in Media Production for Film and Television. So aside from writing scripts for short films and the occasional essay, writing wasn’t on my syllabus.
However, one module had my group and I building a marketing campaign for a business that was assigned to us at random. While researching similar companies and how they went about marketing themselves, I noticed that a lot of them were inconsistent in their voice, lacking in their social media efforts and many were desperately uncreative with how they went about marketing products and services. A pretty picture and brightly coloured poster do not cut it nowadays, unfortunately.
I found the module so fun I took it upon myself to try to fix some of these issues. Starting with small social media pages at University I would take videos, and photos, write posts, script videos, whatever I could at the time. It was clear marketing was my strength and I’ve never looked back.
As for where Taylor Riley will head in the future, who knows? Right now I just want to help people build brands, assist existing businesses in growing and of course build up my own business as high as it can be. Any other opportunities that come my way will be welcomed with open arms.
I’m looking forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Taylor
